Steps for Installing a Range Hood

The importance of a range hood is often underestimated: it helps keep cooking exhaust, smoke, grease, and unpleasant odors out of the kitchen while you cook, roast, or bake. Using a fan to move air out of the kitchen, this appliance helps remove odors and smoke and can also help trap airborne grease.

Range hoods are available in several types, including ducted models and ductless models, which are also called recirculating hoods. The choice between them depends largely on personal preference and how much cooking you do. Ducted hoods are generally considered more effective at removing odors and steam because the air is circulated to the outside. Ductless hoods, by contrast, use a filter and recirculate air back into the kitchen. Each type calls for particular maintenance practices, so be sure to maintain your range hood for optimal performance.

Range Hood Installation: A Step‑by‑Step Procedure

This is a general overview of the installation process. For complete instructions and a list of what you will need, refer to your owner’s manual. It also helps to learn about the different parts of a range hood before you begin. If you are not comfortable doing this work yourself, hiring a professional is recommended.

Before buying a new range hood, keep the following points in mind to help ensure you choose the right model:

· Check the BTU rating. For a hood installed above a gas cooktop, its BTU threshold should meet or exceed the total BTU output of the cooking surface. This helps ensure the hood can handle the heat the range or cooktop produces. Learn how to determine the BTU of your gas stove.

· Measure the range width. Your new hood should be roughly the same width as the range.

· Consider your cooking style. If you often fry, steam, or cook with multiple pots on the surface, it is wise to increase the CFM to ensure sufficient ventilation.

· Consider the kitchen’s square footage. Vent hoods are rated by the amount of air they clear per minute (CFM). Results can vary with your kitchen and house layout, including whether the kitchen is open‑concept or closed‑off. As a general guide, aim for a hood rated at around double the square footage of your kitchen. For example, if your kitchen is approximately 150 sq. ft., look for a hood rated at 300 CFM. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the minimum CFM for your appliance and choose the highest recommended number. Always comply with all state and local standards.

Range Hood Installation: A Step‑by‑Step Guide

Step 1: Take Down the Existing Range Hood (If Present)
Before removing the old hood, switch off its power at the breaker box. Unplug the unit and disconnect all electrical wires. Because the hood is heavy, ask another person to help support it while you remove the mounting screws.

Step 2: Find and Mark the Vent Opening
Measure the new range hood to determine where the vent will exit. If a paper template came with the hood, use it to mark the wall location for the vent hole. If no template is provided, use the hood’s dimensions to establish where the new opening should be.

Step 3: Inspect the Wall at the Vent Location
Before cutting the full‑size hole, make a small exploratory opening in the wall where the vent will pass through. Check for plumbing pipes or electrical wiring that could obstruct the installation. If you discover either, it is best to consult a professional, as you may need to route the vent through the roof, which is a more complex job.

Step 4: Cut the Interior Vent Hole
After confirming that the wall can be cut to vent outside, use an oscillating tool or reciprocating saw to cut an opening at least six inches wide. Making the hole slightly larger can provide more working space. Use a long drill bit to create locator holes that extend to the exterior wall, placing them at the edges of the vent opening.

Step 5: Cut the Exterior Vent Pipe Hole
Before cutting the exterior wall, locate the pilot holes and connect them to outline the circle you will cut. Again, use an oscillating or reciprocating saw. If the exterior wall is paneled or uneven, it may be easier to cut a square piece of PVC trim, mount it on the exterior wall, and cut the hole through the trim.

Step 6: Install the Duct or Range Hood Vent Cap
Push the vent cap into the exterior opening or PVC trim, making sure it is long enough to connect to the range hood. Secure it with screws and apply caulk to create a tight, waterproof seal.

Step 7: Prepare the Damper
If the new hood vent includes a duct damper, measure it against the interior hole to determine the required duct size. Use a short test piece of duct to verify the measurements before cutting a longer section. Mark the outside of the damper to indicate where the ductwork should be taped.

Step 8: Route the Electrical Wiring
If needed, drill holes beside each side of the vent so you can run electrical wiring from the hood to the electrical box. Ensure there is sufficient conduit and wire from the breaker to the hood’s electrical terminal box. Make certain the wiring meets code requirements. If you are not confident about running electrical wiring, it is strongly advisable to consult an electrician.

Step 9: Position the Range Hood
With a second person supporting the hood’s weight, insert the mounting screws through the hood’s mounting slots.

Step 10: Tighten the Mounting Screws
Remove the grease filter to improve access, then tighten the screws to secure the hood. Level the hood and tighten the upper screws first.

Step 11: Complete the Wiring Connections
Trim any excess wiring and strip the wire ends to connect them with wire caps or connectors. Match each wire color to the corresponding connector, and connect the copper ground wire to the grounding connector.

Step 12: Install the Vent Covers
After completing the wiring, restore power and check that the hood operates correctly. Then install the vent covers, following the detailed instructions in your owner’s manual.
